Zeke Kapopoulos, a twelve-year-old boy surviving the faltering climate of the mid-21st century, barely supports himself and his eccentric mother by selling salvaged batteries recharged with electricity he’s siphoned off the grid.
Determined to overcome cold and hunger, Zeke deciphers sketches and notes left behind by his physicist father, from which he invents a bigger and better power-harvester called the QuARC.
During its first chaotic test, the new device interferes with a huge, secret underground experiment with one major flaw of its own. The QuARC's telltale effects attract the attention of two rival physicists who recognize the missing work of Zeke’s father. While pursuing one of the scientists to recover the stolen QuARC, Zeke accidentally steps into a matter-bending trap powered by his own invention, which transforms him into a pair of doppelgängers with split personalities.
Unaware of each others' existence or the catastrophic consequences of physical contact, the two Zekes set out on a collision course, until they discover that like their father before them, only they can prevent cosmic oblivion.
